Second Life Running With Fedora Linux
Submitted by alexis on Fri, 2007-01-12 03:14.
Now I've just downloaded an updated version and it worked. After you've correctly setup 3D rendering for the ATI card you just need to download the Second Life client for Linux, I'm running version 1.13.2 (5), I found the link in the Second Life forum for the Linux client. At first I had some problems with ALT + clicking but these threads helped me to get the problem solved. The first thread tells how to disable using ALT + click in Gnome. I use KDE, there you find the relevant options going to Control Center > Desktop > Window Behavior > Window Actions. I changed the modifier key in the Inner Window, Titlebar & Frame to Meta (which is the Window key in my keyboard). I also started Second Life with:
After doing that I still had some issues with my camera and ALT clicking so I went full screen (View > Toggle Fullscreen or ALT + Enter) and things seem to be working fine now. I can't teleport right now but I guess is just a temporal grid issue. I hope this helps all linuxers out there to get into Second Life. By the way, I'm Mento Gamba, shoot me an IM while you are in-world. Update: Bad timing! There was in fact a grid problem when I wrote this article; however, after it was resolved, I still couldn't teleport. The problem was that I was using a preview version of the Linux client which uses the Beta Grid. I grabbed a copy of the non-preview client, the one the link above refers too, and now I'm back on business. Trackback URL for this post:http://ventanazul.com/webzine/trackback/30

Fedora 6?
Hi I run both Windows XP and Mac OS9 at the moment (please don't hurt me) but I want to switch to Linux as I despise Bill Gates and all the Vista antics he's putting the world through to get cash before he resigns as CEO. I have looked around and I have to admit (this is very sad, I know) that my final decision on the Linux version I'd get would depend on if it runs Second Life or not 8-). Firstly, does SUSE 10.2 run it, and the Fedora Core 6? Thanks,

Fedora runs Second Life
Hi Alphawolf, I'm running Second Life in Fedora 5 so I guess Fedora 6 would do it too.
Just follow the advice to enable 3D rendering in the links I posted above and you will be fine.
I also run the Linux client in full screen mode, alt-clicking didn't work right otherwise.
Thanks for stopping by and of course I'll contact you in world.
Regards!
