Joomla and Drupal: The best CMS of 2006

And the winner of the best open source CMS award 2006 is Joomla.

After counting more than 16000 votes and the selections of three judges, there was a tie in the first place between Joomla and Drupal, which had to be resolved by a fourth independent judge.

Joomla is considered to be very easy to install and have one of the largest and more active communities.

Drupal highlighted points were how long the project had been around, its secure code and clever node and permissions system.

Congratulations to all the participants and the open source movement!

Joomla does not impress me, Drupal does

I spend quite some time a while back evaluating different CMS systems. At first, I really liked Joomla. It is easy to install, and looks good out of the box. But it seems to promise more than it delivers. I found that setting up navigation and menus was a nightmare. That's when I started looking for something else. I consider Joomla to be light-weight, although the same can not be said for its marketing effort!

To me, the real contest is between WordPress and Drupal. They both have their merits, and both are serious systems with serious users.

Still, Joomla (and its predecessor Mambo) were early on the scene and I'm sure they did a lot for the open source community in general, and content management systems in particular. If they have a strong user base, there must be something going for them.

Why do people like joomla?

This is something I have to agreee on, I used Mambo / joomla a for a lot of sites and replaced them all. Personally I think Joomla sounds very clever but it has a horrible backend and somethings are nearly impossible.

Even with the all the expensive components I bought I could not get things done the way I could with postnuke for instance. Right now I'm using a commercial CMS because even wordpress was not good enought. And drupal just gave me a headache :P

I really can't understand

I really can't understand the reason Joomla is voted as the best. Yes, it is very good and in my opinion better than every other but not than Elxis.
Elxis is an open source PROFESSIONAL CMS and has many advantages in comparison with Joomla.
It is safer, it supports multilingual sites, it offers great back-end and much more....
Change Joomla, turn it into Elxis

It makes no sense whatever

Joomla is nice and sweet but, WebAPP from http://www.web-app.net eats it for breakfast when it comes to the best open source CMS out there.

IMO Drupal is better than

IMO Drupal is better than Joomla. All of my websites are powered by Drupal and WordPress.

OpenCMS

I found OpenCMS better than Joomla, though I agree Joomla has a large userbase and a lot of documentation and tutorials. Maybe that's the reason of its popularity.

Not Yaza

Yaza works with the WebAPP project, and I know he would NOT post something like this here. When Yaza gets out of the hospital I will have to tell him about this. By WebAPP project, I am NOT talking about the web-app.net project. See Internet Archive Wayback Machine .

The above 2 posts are web-app.net commment spam and are impersonating other people.

Other than that, I agree - I've heard a lot of good things about Joomla, and it's neat-looking too - just not in Perl. ;)

webapp

.net crazies are just that, crazy!

Joomla

Joomla isn't all that bad, I was able to put together a pretty good site with it. Okinawa Photography. Not the best photography portal, but then again not too bad imho.

Joomla has so many cool and

Joomla has so many cool and attractive templates. Layout looks great! Drupal templates looks just like same..(not insult but bit boring).. If you dont have a big budget and get your site quickly done with beautiful layout.. I would say go with joomla. Sometime I wonder why Joomla is there for free?! And joomla has alots of alotz of free modules and components.. (they do have comercials as well)I'm not a joomla marketer or something. Just fallen in love with joomla recently. lol

What Gallery are you using for your Photography site?

Curious as to what gallery component you are using for your Photography site? looks like some nice integration of the front page.

web-app.org is for junkies

web-app.org is for junkies?

Why, because the person above is a well known junkie. She tried stealing a work done by a group of good programmers at www.web-app.net long before she even knew what Perl was, he reward was having her junkie stolen and badly changed script hacked and defaced several times, yes search google... search archives and see for your self.

Agree

with joomla which I consider not the best out there, I was able to do some graphic tricks on my website, excellent PNG 32 support on IE 7.0 and firefox 2.XX.

Congratulations Joomla!! I

Congratulations Joomla!! I don't think its the most impressive software out there, but it does the job.

Joomla??

Congratulations Joomla!! Although I personally don't think that it is the most impressive tool available-- but it does it's job.

Joomla should be really be

Joomla should be really be up there.
and why not ? a great templating system, cool features there are a lot of things that you can do with it ,In fact I think if you are looking for an CMS which should do the work it's supposed to do then Joomla is the best in it' class.

Till today 2146 extensions and most of them are free and very useful has given it more solidity.

A solid backend then why not Joomla ?

How many CMS out there offer give you so many extensions/contributions to make life simple ?

Hi, i didn't know much (or

Hi, i didn't know much (or anything) about drupal. Can such a webpage like http:7wins.eu with much of a product listing for software also be realised with drupal? Please give me a hint for this.

After using Wordpress I

After using Wordpress I wanted to switch to a more robust CMS, and after looking at both Joomla and Drupal I found Drupal to be the best choice.

I tried most of the CMS and Joomla is the best for now!

I was changing my static website to a dynamic website and I was testing most of the CMS out there. Joomla has the best features and easy to follow on setting up of all. I agree that Joomla should be up there on the top of all.

CMS for windows Hosting

I have tested many CMS. But i could not found for my windows hosting. Joomla and Drupal. Please tell me if i am using windows hosting. Which CMS will be the best for me. It should be free like both discussed above.

Joomla

I think you are correct when stating the real contest is wordpess vs drupal. jumla is very easy to install and set up but modifying it is a nightmare and i have never been successful with it

I Like Wordpress for its Simplicity and SEO friendly

Well I like wordpress because it's very simple and practice. You could create article and upload images/files and new category just in a text editor. You also could create flexible categories.

I wonder why there is not any single comment on wordpress.
BTW, I used to use Mambo and Joomla.

Wordpress is not a CMS

Wordpress is a blog system not a CMS, so you can't compare joomla or drupal with wordpress.

I have tested a lot of CMSs but have found Joomla as the best one.
Reasons:
1- Ease of use and setup
2- Great layouts
3- Most active community
4- Most number of add-ons available
you can find extension or component for almost anything.
5- Most number of templates available (Commercial+ free)
and a lot more things, where other are way behind.

Joomla is good but still not the perfect one

I'm using Joomla for my site almost a year. I think this CMS is good enough although maybe is not the best one.

It does not validate as a

It does not validate as a html file...
No good....
Validate on validator.w3.org

Joomla all the way

Joomla is an awesome website once you actually get used to using it, I love using Joomla.

Joomla vs. Drupal

Which one would you recommend for novice users: Joomla or Drupal?

Ron D.

My company uses it

The company I work for relies heavily on Joomla. They are aware of many security issues that come with open source ground but they think that the pros outweight the problems.

I recommend WebAPP for the real Perl CMS

I recommend WebAPP for the real Perl CMS, nothing personally, but php i for kids, why not use the real Perl?

I really like Joomla. I've

I really like Joomla. I've switched from Drupal and haven't looked back.

I Like Joomla

I have used Joomla for 2 years, I switch to it from SMF.

Thank's

I've used both Joomla and

I've used both Joomla and Drupal, and personally I think it was a real shame that Joomla was put on top, mostly because anyone who know about access and permissions knows that Drupal has it in the bag over Joomla, and when you're one the scale of portals/cms that tends to play a really big deal. I would recommend a novice take the time and learn Drupal, it's more robust. And a few points:
1) what is this thing about "Ease of installation"? this shouldn't be a criterion, if you're being hired to administer of a site neither of these should be a problem. think over your position.
2) i am on Joomla's extensions site almost 24/7. They have circa 2776 extensions, and most or specialist and not what you would be looking for. trust me on this. you can go to most favoured and editors pick and you'll find about 30 that actually make a difference and make a change, much everything else is really for special cases and won;t fit your bill. On the other had, Drupal has many features built in that Joomla requires extensions for, and their extensions (modules) tend to all focus on significant changes in general. the site isn't flooded with a thousand excess specialist modules.
3) joomla nails it on a great looking site. hands down if an immediate requirement is for a site to look nice you might cry with drupal. (drupal user might want to check out roopletheme;s tapestry, its a great start for v6, as well as marinelli)

I think most people like the idea of Joomla and it's great community and extensions. One thing you have to consider that will probably come into play is that having alot of extensions may sound great, but it's not. Because when time comes to upgrade, you have to spend alot of time looking around for patches for all the million extensions you download. My tip for novices - try to get the most bang with the least number of extensions, regarddless of the system. Any Joomla user from version <1.0.11 can tell you of upgrade nightmares. Get the idea that 2000 extensions is a good thing out of your head.

my 2 cents

congratulations Drupal! I

congratulations Drupal! I havent used Drupal yet. But I like Joomla so far. Xoops I used, but no more development caused me to switch.
kindest regards

Drupal Fan

For me Drupal rocks and does the job.

drupal

Yes Drupal is the best I think.

For CMS I'd go for joomla.

For CMS I'd go for joomla. Joomla is the best for CMS management.

The Best CMS

Let's settle this.
Joomla and Drupal are written in PHP and everyone knows PHP is an inferior language. PHP is slow, not very portable, and most of all insecure. I would like to quote a poor excuse from Zeev, one or the developers of PHP. He says: "PHP 4.0 (Zend) uses the stack for intensive data, rather than using the heap. That means that its tolerance recursive functions is significantly lower than that of other languages." Any questions?

The developers of WebAPP work on the script at webapp.net! The org website was bought by a rouge developer that was ejected from the core group while the site was down. The only active developers do not want to be associated with the .org location anymore. Look at the original credits and look who's active at net before you talk about any history. Yes .org was first but shut down and took over. That's when the core developers moved to .net. Get it, got it, good!

From my point of view

From my point of view DotNetNuke have everything but I respect Joomla & Drupal too because this two has created buzz !

I agree with Yaza

I agree with Yaza, the multilingual CMS Portal from: WebAPP is the best Perl CMS script out there.

Selecting CMS

To be honest with you having read the above points arising out of this lively discussion I am still at pain as to which way to go. I had eveluated PHpNuke, find it good, Post-Nuke again not bad.

I was impressed when I read about Plone and visited websites done with it. I tried installing it but failed. Then I installed Drupal but I am still struggling to enhance with add-ons but in vain.

I am try to launch a website for our non-profit organisation but cannot decide which CMS to choose as I need something to be user-friendly, interactive, robust and multimedia in the sense that it should allow dynamic publishing, social network building, blogging and audio and video streaming.

So any techie or geeks out there would like to advise me on the selection of a good open source CMS. contact 00919810036363

I love Wordpress more!

I love Wordpress more!

I can't live without WebAPP CMS

I can't live without WebAPP CMS: http://www.web-app.net

I like Joomla

I like Joomla. I used it to create a photographer portfolio site Photographer Edinburgh. It might be more appropriate for this type of photography portfolio site to go purely with flash but i like it so far and use flash sparingly.

thanks

thanks..i have a few joomla sites and have build a strong client based portal with it...so far so good for me lol

Drupal Vs Joomla

Both of these are great open source projects. I am more familiar with Drupal, but I have seen a lot of great things form both Drupal and Joomla. The CMS awards really had a tough choice, but you can't go wrong with any of them.

I like Joomla

I am happy with joomle cause its highly configurable and when i need a plugin i always find it. Thank you community

thank you

open source community in general, and content management systems in particular. nice script.

Give me Drupal over Joomla

Give me Drupal over Joomla any day.

It's probably just what I'm used to but I think it's so much better and easier to use

joomla is not user friendly

I work with wordpress cause it is very user friendly. There are a lot of plugins and it woks perfect for my company. We can work together online and all changes are published and eat by google immediately. Joomla works also good but it cost me a lot of time to gain the same result...
